Saltmen leave it late but progress in the Vase at 1st attempt

Droitwich Spa; entering the FA Vase for the first time in their history made the journey to Hereford and to many sprung a shock result, knocking out higher ranked Pegasus Juniors.

The Saltmen dominated the opening exchanges - Max Crisp, Haydn Morris and James Lemon all coming close and testing home 'keeper Stuart Turpin.
James Lemon's effort from 12 yards out hit the outside of the post early on and Pegasus failed to trouble Matt Oliver in the first period.

Droitwich stalwart Andy Crowther on his return from a hamstring injury pulled up on 32 minutes. His replacement Nick Seabourne made an early return from is ankle fracture, and as Spa's personnell and tactics changed, as did the game.
Pegasus were enjoying much more possession for the remainder of the half, but Spa's back line and midfield stood firm to deny any chances.

However, it was West Midlands Premier League Pegasus Juniors who took the lead on 55 minutes when a cute ball down the wing was latched on to by Ben Price; his delicate chip over the on-rushing Matt Oliver in the Droitwich goal giving the hosts the lead.

Pegasus had grown in to the game, and until the final quarter Droitwich struggled to break them down.

The chances started to come for the Spa though, with Morris hitting the angle of post and bar as well as forcing an excellent save from Turpinthe pick of them. There were also near misses courtesy of Crisp, Burgess and Lemon and it was looking like it was not going to be Droitwich's day.

However, late drama as in the 94th minute Matt Hunt rose highest to head home Max Crisp's corner to send the tie to extra time and the noisy visiting contingent and bench into elation.

The late, late equaliser looked to have knocked the stuffing out of the hosts as Droitwich rallied and created a great deal of the chances in extra time- home 'keeper Stuart Turpin having to be at his best to deny Lemon and Burgess.

On 98 minutes a deep cross from Curtis Townley was met by James Lemon to send the visitors ahead for the first time in the game.

Pegasus caused few problems to the Midland League Division 2 side as they ran out of steam.
The Saltmen made sure of the win on 117 minutes after good work from substitute Dan Cottrill and Lemon down the right teed up Bradley Burgess who turned defender Paul Allan inside out before his clinical finish sealed the win for the Saltmen and Burgess's third winner in as many games!

Droitwich now travel to Shifnal Town in the second qualifying round on Saturday 23rd September (ko 3pm).
