Saltmen stumble in to next round

Droitwich Spa eventually got the better of their Worcestershire rivals Feckenham in defence of the Presidents Cup, but they made hard work of it.

The Saltmen came into the game off the back of questionably their best performance of the season against Fairfield the previous week, while the inconsistant Millers had exited the Worcestershire Junior Cup at the hands of Division 3 Inkberrow.

The form book went out of the window though - the home side came out of the blocks quickest and were in control for most of the game - their best chance to take the lead however was in the 20th minute and it took a fabulous triple save from Matt Oliver to keep the hosts at bay denying Jack Brimmell and Danny Murphy.

Droitwich were careless in possesion and the normaly reliable Graeme Pardoe was one of many who were out of sorts today. Spa fashioned a few chances of their own and all fell to Nick Seabourne - a couple of heaed efforts narrowly missed the target and then a strong run cutting in from the left saw the front man round the Feckenham keeper Josh Goddard but then flashed his shot across goal, albeit from a very tight angle.
The hosts continued to create more chances, mostly falling to front-mn Brimmell and Oliver had one more save to make before the half time whistle.

The first few minutes of the second half continued in the same fashion with possesion generally controlled by the Millers but a more organised looking Spa back-line protected Oliver's goal well.

At the other end, Lemon spurned a half chance as the game petered out into a scrappy midfield battle as the rain started to pour.

On the hour, the Saltmen started to see more of the ball and looked alot better going forward. Finally the breakthrough came when Jack Brighton's corner was headed in by James Lemon attacking the near post.

More Droitwich pressure ensued but Seabourne missed the target when it looked like he should have made more of the chance - the introduction of Aston Gunter and Josh Seikora gave added impetus as both Max Crisp and Jamie Smith hobbled off mid-way through the half - surely a worry with a busy run of games for Oliver & Owen's men.

The closing stages saw Feckenham back in charge of the play, however Lemon broke away and was brought down by the keeper. The referee pointed to the spot but the normally reliable Lemon fired the ball low to the Goddard's right and the stopper made a fine save to keep the hosts in it.

There was one final chance for Feckenham - a close range volley on the turn from Ryan Edwards flashed narrowly wide of the Spa goal and the Saltmen were much relieved to hear the final whistle.

The next round brings a tough test against current League leaders Barnt Green Spartak at King George's, Date TBA
